Severe Duty Motors

The severe duty motors with their robust cast iron housing are the first choice for all major applications in normal industrial environments, as well as in harsh environments. They are very reliable, even under extreme conditions, versatile, extremely compact, and easy to handle. Very high efficiencies ensure economical and sustainable operation.

In addition to induction (asynchronous) motors for direct-on-line and converter operation, two different synchronous motor technologies are available. These need to be used always with a frequency converter (VSD).

Technology overview:

Key Highlights:

1. Platform Commonality: VSD motors are mechanically identical to Severe Duty line motors, differing only in rotor technology.

2. Ultra-High Efficiency: Achieves IE4 or IE5 energy efficiency, even at partial loads.

3. Rich Options: Inherits most optional configurations from the line motor range (e.g., construction types, protection levels, terminal box positions).

4. Two Synchronous Technology Paths:

    • Synchronous Reluctance Motor (SynRM): No rotor windings, offering high dynamic performance and excellent partial-load efficiency with standard power-shaft height assignments.

    • Permanent Magnet Motor (PMSM): Delivers top-tier IE5 efficiency and high power density—can be up to three frame sizes smaller than an induction motor of the same power rating. Provides constant torque from lowest speeds, high overload capability, and overspeed capacity.
